Bonnie Haaning Oliver grew up in Elmhurst, in a musical + artistic family and lived a life filled with creativity, happiness and faith. She was married to her sweetheart Stephen John for 45 years, until his passing in 2016. A professional crafter for 40+ years, she participated in many local and out-of-state shows where she made many close and enduring friendships.
She was known for her beautiful singing voice and was a part of the concert choir at Wheaton College, a ladies trio at Winnetka Bible Church and the church choir at Elmhurst’s First Baptist Church.
In 2010, after the Haitian earthquake and while still undergoing chemotherapy treatments, Bonnie started sewing dresses for orphans via a Christian organization helping these children. To date, she’s made nearly 500 dresses and in 2018 received a City of Elmhurst “Outstanding Senior Citizen Award” for her volunteer work. More than anything, she was happiest at her sewing machine amidst her forest of dresses.
Bonnie possessed a kind, generous, beautiful spirit and faithfully served the Lord throughout her life. She typically had a smile on her face and was always willing to lend a helping hand to someone who needed it. She is survived by her daughter, Linnea Elin Oliver, of Alameda, CA.
