Gracie Mae Chastain, nee Stout, age 93, of Elmhurst passed away on October 31, 2019 at Atria Assisted Living in Glen Ellyn, IL.
She was born on December 14, 1925 in Billings, Oklahoma as the youngest of 8 children.
She graduated from Oklahoma A&M, now Oklahoma State. She married the love of her life Charles Eugene Chastain on April 2, 1947 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. They settled in Elmhurst in 1957, after living in Oklahoma, Missouri and Hazel Crest, Illinois. Charles owned his business “High Strength Plastics” and later PTC, a consulting company. He and Gracie raised their 4 children in a neighborhood on Poplar Avenue that had tons of kids and plenty of adults who would become lifelong friends for her and Charles. They started visiting churches and she and Charles found their forever church home in First Baptist Church of Elmhurst, now City View Community Church. At one time or another, Gracie did almost everything there including nursery, Pioneer Girls, church suppers, and Harvest Home.
When she lost the love of her life in 1978, she had to make a new life for herself. She did that with the help of her family, her church and her many very good friends that she made during the next stage of her life.
In October 2018, the church in Elmhurst held a celebration for her, recognizing her over 60 years faithful attendance and active participation.
A hymn that Gracie loved was “All the way my Savior Leads me.” Asked about her favorite Bible verse, she replied, “Oh, there are so many.”
Gracie survived by her four children: Jan (Richard) Concklin of Madison, WI, Bruce (Susie) Chastain of Mineral Bluff, GA, Steve (JoAnn Byron) Chastain of Palatine, IL and Gail (Steve Baginski) Chastain of Wheaton, IL. She is also survived by 3 grandchildren, Tracy (Scott) Carolan, Tim (Jennifer) Concklin and Robert (Angie Sommers) Concklin, and 5 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles, her parents Albert & Alice Stout, 2 brothers and 5 sisters.
Family was all important to her and she demonstrated that in so many ways. She will be missed by those of us left behind, but she is finally with her Lord Jesus and happy in His presence.
